Jacob Blake.

Jacob Blake.

One more gone. One today, one yesterday, one the day before…How long will this go on for? How long until this stops? How many more of my brothers and sisters will die before they realize what they’ve done?

Jacob Blake was trying to deescalate a conflict between two individuals. He was shot by the police 7 times in the back, right in front 3 of his children.

Dylan Roof fatally murdered nine innocent people at a church. The police bought him Burger King right after.

One was white, one was black. Try and guess who was who.

America: “Worlds greatest country,” “land of the Free.”

Racism is not only clear in American society, it is built into the system. It is engraved in the system’s core. The building blocks of the U.S. have been built around the concept of racism, and that’s no surprise to anyone. The White House itself was built by slaves, supervised by the whites. Once again, that’s no surprise. Racism has always and will always exist. The only question is, when will we actively try and punish racists? When will the murderers of innocent blacks be brought to justice? How many lives will it take?

500? 600? 1000? Because they’ve already taken over 400.

This is a question I’d like to ask President Trump.

The “President” who can tweet anything and everything in the world, but not tweet “Black Lives Matter.”

The president who’s “Done the most for the black people of America”

The president who has done nothing since the death of George Floyd.

In today’s society, if a crisis doesn’t effect the rich, privileged people living in first world countries, nothing is done about it. Take the crisis in Yemen, for example; millions of innocent people don’t have the basic needs to support their families or themselves, but nothing is being down by first world countries to help them out since it won’t affect the rich. There are countless examples of this, the Uyghur muslims in concentration camps, the bombings in Palestine, the oppressed Kashmiris, the public murders of religious minorities in India…the list goes on and on. On the other hand though, a crisis like the Covid-19 pandemic, which has impacted everyone in almost every country is currently the number one topic of discussion and even the rich and privileged are afraid and funding possible vaccines.

“Oh but this is a deadly virus, so obviously everyone’s going to care,” no, not at all. Ebola broke out twice in Africa and it had a much higher mortality rate. Most people don’t even know that there was another recent outbreak not even a year ago. Why? Because it doesn’t affect the privileged.

The same goes for racism, but this time even the rich aren’t immune.

During this pandemic (almost) EVERYONE is spreading awareness and telling each other to wear masks. We need to do the same in terms of racial injustice. We need the same privileged people in this scenario (the non-coloured and/or the people in a position of power) to not ignore us again and again like the privileged have ignored Palestine, Yemen, India, China, Indonesia…

We need the ones who the police won’t hurt to stand by us, to support us, because they won’t do it when you’re watching.
